Tips For Betting On Horse Racing

You do really have to know some of the basics of horse racing before you are ready to place down a bet.  It may seem like a lot of fun, but if you don't know what you are doing, it could cost you dearly.

For starters, you have to check out the past performances of the horse. Since you are most likely betting from home, you will have to get the racing form. Each of the horse's past performance could provide some insight to how well or poor the horse  is going to do in the next race.

You should never just trust the odds.  Many betters assume that how good a horse is, is all based on odds.  It really isn't, so you have to make sure to do your homework first.

Take a look at the trainer.  Obviously it's impossible to know every single trainer that's out there, you can always pick up a trainer's stats to give you some indication of how well his horses run.  If you can find a trainer whose horses have a history of finishing in the money more times than not, you've got yourself a winner.

Make sure to take note of the wind speed.  This has to be one of the most underlooked aspects of horse racing. Many horses tire when they come down the stretch due to a strong wind in their face.

The surface of the track is also important.  Some horses race better on different tracks than others.

Check to see the horse's previous races and see what kind of distance they were.  If it's a horse whose racing history is mostly short distance, he may not be ready to win a long distance race.

Learn about the jockey. What kind of history does he have?  It would be nice to see at least a winning average of 10 percent.

Also, how many horses are in the race?  You could be the surest thing ever, but the more horses that are in the race, the higher the chance of a racing mishap.  These mishaps are usually due to the traffic.  It could be something as simple as the horse getting bumped or stumbling.

Needless to say, there is a lot to learn.  If you are new to betting on horse racing, it is highly recommended that you learn how to bet correctly with one of the many horse racing systems that are available.
