5 Tips For Spotting Tells in
Poker
If you are playing Texas Holdem poker (or any kind of poker for
that matter) you have to be able to tell when an opponent is
bluffing. Any great poker player can spot a liar on the
table. It's your job to know this as
well.
Here are the top five tips for spotting tells when
playing poker:
1) The way the player plays with his/her
chips. Many poker players like to play around
with their chips as they play. The neater the stack the tighter
the player. The messier the looser style. Obviously
this is not set in stone, but you can bet on it (no pun
intended) more times than not.
2) Placing the chips in the pot. If
the player tosses them in a nervous fashion in that they spill
or are just not very neat and they have to go pick them and
tidy them up a bit, means they are hiding
something.
3) The way they buy chips. If you see
some loudmouth waving his cash around and yells to the dealer
for his chips, you have a very good idea that he is a very
loose player. On the other side of the coin, if a player
asks for the chips in soft tone and is very low key about it,
you can guess that he is a tighter player.
4) Sighs & groans. Obviously, most
players aren't that dramatic about it, but a lot of people will
quietly sigh or tisk. When you see that, you can
almost guarantee that he is bluffing. But you have to pay
attention. It's usually done subtly.
5) Never look at a flop when the dealer deals
it. I'm sure you could imagine why. That's
what every other player is doing! You have
plenty of time to look at the cards that were dealt. You should
be focusing on the the player's reactions to the flops. If the
player looks away from the flop, you can almost guarantee that
he has a good hand, because he doesn't want people to see him
stare. If the player just stares at the flop, you know
he's got nothing.
